6 Ways to Help Motivate You to Act In Spite of Fear

There is nothing worst than living a fear driven life. The fear of not being good enough, the fear of not being smart enough, the fear of what other people might think of you and so on… all are stories crea

ted in our minds that we have made real, once we made the decision to become paralyzed by thought of acting in spite of fear. When the truth is fear is nothing more than a well orchestrated illusion designed to keep us entertained by mediocrity.

I’m so done with fear. I’m done being scared. I’m done making decisions based on my fear and insecurities. I’m done with my half-assed approach towards achieving my goals. I’m done listening to scared people who didn’t go after their dreams who are trying desperately to hold me back from reaching my own.

I’ve hit a point of critical mass in my life, where I’ve realized life is far too short to let this divine gift be wasted away as I vicariously watch others live their dreams from the side lines.

It’s no longer okay to send mixed messages to my subconscious mind about things I wish to be so, but then take weeks or months before I act on it.

The days of pursuing happiness by following empty dreams are over. I’m now extremely careful with the things I say and the promises I commit to. I’m holding myself to higher standard of living –– it’s no longer okay to make promise that I’m not 100% committed to fulfill.

I want to send a very clear and direct message to myself: if I speak it then it shall be done.

The first

question most people might think is How? How did I find the motivation I needed to act in spite of fear?

Good question and I’ll answer that in a little bit.

For the moment, I want to answer another question which is this: What made me come to the decision that I was no longer willing to let myself become paralyzed by fear?

I like what Zig Zigglar, once said

“Everything you can ever want is on the other side of fear.”

What I’ve learned over and over again from doing the thing I feared is that the outcome is rarely as bad as I originally envisioned it. In fact, there are two things on the other side of fear: success or failure.

Typically the latter comes first, however failure is not as notoriously bad as it’s made out to be.

Yes I know, at times it can be very unforgiving, unapologetic and untimely, but there is no question that there are lessons to be learned from it, if you decide to see failure for what it is: temporary.

When looking at failure from this light, it sincerely helps alter your prospective. I no longer look at it as the end, only the beginning of lessons I have yet to learn.

Failure is actually a friend who has taught me many important lessons.

  • It’s taught me the root of my core values. If it compromises my integrity I’m simply not down.
  • It took me a while but it’s taught me whom to let go of and whom to keep within the circle of my friends.
  • It’s taught me that things often appear to be too good usually are. There is simply no such thing as something for nothing.
  • It’s taught me that there is no point of trying to imitate someone else. It’s better to be a first class “me”, the a coach class imitation of someone else.
  • It’s taught me that perfection is over rated. I’d rather be a messy success progressing than a tidy perfectionist regressing

So you’ve failed at something, so what? Name one great person who hasn’t failed and I’ll show you a great liar.

So, fail often, fail shamelessly but do it with a smile. Because you are getting it out of the way, so that one day you will have nothing but room for success. Success by your words, by your definition, on your terms because it’s your life

Success to me is nothing more than the accumulation of good habits practiced consistently over time, acting in spite of your fear is one of those habits.
If you have a vision for what it is you want, don’t for a second believe that things will miraculously happen overnight.
Anything really worth doing is worth doing right, this is why success takes time.

Here are 6 things that you can focus on to help give you the motivation you need in order to act in spite of fear.

I’m not at all suggesting that you focus on them all at once. One of the easiest ways to deflate your motivation and kill your productivity is by trying multitask. (I wrote an article on an effective way to overcoming multitasking).

What I am suggesting is focus on the one thing that resonates most with you and work from there.

  • Find Your Passion . Leo Babauta of the blog the Zen habits writes a short but powerful guide with a series of powerful questions you can ask yourself in order to help you find what you are most passionate about. When you find what you are truly passionate about, this will help give you the motivation to figuring out what are some of the step you need to take in order to live it.
  • Overcome Negative Self Talk To determine the vitality of our mental health we must frequently examine how we speak to ourselves. Our self talk is the barometer that determines our overall attitude and outlook on life. When we have control over the little voices that play in our mind, we are more likely to be motivated to work through any fears or obstacles that might stand in our way.
  • Avoid Negative people. Sometimes it’s the people who are closest to us that have the biggest influence in the way we think and feel about ourselves. Since people have this much power over us, make sure that the friends you keep in your circle are ones you can trust with your life, as their influence will have a major impact in our lives.
  • Reclaim Your Dreams When we lose sight of our dreams, it becomes easy to let dips in life soil our view about reality. A good friend of mine, Jonathan Mead, wrote this incredible guide to helping you get back on track toward reclaiming your dreams. If you’ve at all lost sight of your dreams, this is must read.
  • Never neglect the person you see in the mirror. This is the only person in the world who has witnessed the entirety of your life. This person has experienced the thick, the thin, the highs, the lows, the good and the bad. There are not many certainties in life, but here’s one: This person will stick with you for life. So in exchange for its lifelong service, make sure you place a high value on the person you see in the mirror.
  • Find work that is within alignment of your heart. Consider this: most people feel like their work is meaningless, unsatisfying and empty. If you want to fill this emptiness with some peace and fulfillment, you must commit yourself to doing work that make you feel alive. If you would quit your job today if either A won the lottery or B came down with a terminal illness were you only had 1 year to live, then you are seriously short changing yourself. It’s time to start exploring a more passion based option.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Fear seems the be the number reason why most people are unmotivated to go after their passion. What is it about fear that makes us feel paralyzed-by the very thought- of taking the exact action that help us progress? What are your thoughts about this? What are some methods not listed above that you use that helps motivate you to act in spite of fear? And finally are there any thought relevant to this topic that you think might add value to the community?
